How to record audio from a Bluetooth microphone on my iPhone, iPad or Mac?
In recent versions of the app, Bluetooth microphones should be detected and used automatically (once they are connected to your iPhone, iPad or Mac). If your Bluetooth microphone is not available in Audio Memos, try these solutions:
- Make sure the settings called "Use only internal hardware" and "Record sound from other apps" are disabled in Audio Memos. To find these settings, press the wheel shaped button under the list of memos, then look in the first section called "Audio".
- Make sure the microphone is connected to your device. Open the "Settings" app and navigate to the "Bluetooth" section. Make sure "Bluetooth" is enabled. Then select your Bluetooth device in the list. If it is not in the list, put your Bluetooth microphone in pairing mode (this usually required making a long press on a button of the microphone, see the user manual of your Bluetooth device for the exact procedure). There are faster ways to know your microphone is connected, but they are not as reliable. Some Bluetooth devices have a light indicating if a connection is established. Even in that case, make sure it is connected to the device you are trying to record from. When a Bluetooth microphone is connected to an iPhone, an icon of a headset or of the Bluetooth logo should be visible in status bar when the Control Center is visible (make it visible by swiping down from the top of the screen).
- In some rare cases, the audio system might be dysfunctional. To fix this, first try to force close Audio Memos. To do so, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold your finger on the screen to make the app switcher appear (if you have a physical home button on your iPhone, press it twice instead), then swipe the screenshot of Audio Memos up and out of the screen. If that is not enough, try rebooting your device: press and hold the power button and the volume up button (or the home button if you have a physical button for it) until a power off message appears, then confirm it.
Older versions of Audio Memos had a setting called "Use Bluetooth mic". Automatically detecting a Bluetooth microphone used to slow down the app, which is why it was not enabled by default on older versions. Now that detecting Bluetooth devices is faster, the setting "Use Bluetooth mic" is not needed anymore (it is as if the setting was always enabled).
Note that audio recorded over a Bluetooth microphone may not be of the highest quality. It is also not possible to record in stereo using a Bluetooth microphone. This is due to limitations in the Bluetooth standard. If you need a high quality audio recording, it is recommended to use a wired microphone. You can connect a microphone with a jack connector or a USB microphone. This can require using an adapter.
